During the Animal Control's portion of todays Community Service meeting the committee was notified of a recent increase in abandoned horses in the county, eight horses and counting in the last 60 days. As finances tighten for some paying for the boarding of these animals become stressful if not impossible.
There are however alternatives to just dropping these horses in the middle of nowhere, which not only pose a threat to the animals but carry the possiblity of endangering drivers. The Kankakee County Humane Foundation are happy to assist in any way possible, including finding such animals welcoming homes, they can be reached at 815-937-2949.
The idea of putting a permit in place for farms who wanted to house horses was brought up but quickly shutdown by some vocal members of the committee as an unnecessary and overreaching enforcement, which I agree with entirely. We don't need more permits or laws, just more responsible citizens.
Thanks for Your Time,
James Skutt - County Board Member District 26
